Kela and pharmacies collaborate in terms of reimbursements for medicine expenses. They have made an agreement on direct reimbursement. When a customer buys medicines from a pharmacy, the customer gets reimbursement directly. The pharmacy charges Kela later for crediting the direct reimbursement. By presenting your Kela card, the reimbursement can be credited to you directly at the pharmacy. Kela has given strict instructions for pharmacies on crediting reimbursements.

Reimbursements for medicine expenses changed at the turn of the year 1.1.2016

The largest change that concerns the reimbursements for medicine expenses is an initial deductible of €50 per calendar year.

Kela reimbursements for medicine expenses have changed at the beginning of the year 2016. A new initial deductible has been added to reimbursements for medicine expenses. An initial deductible means that the customer has to pay his/hers reimbursable prescription medicines entirely by himself/herself until 50 euros. Previously Kela reimbursement has already been given for the first medicine purchases of the year.

The initial deductible concerns everyone over 18 years old. It will take effect on one’s reimbursements for medicine expenses at the beginning of the year when the person turns 19. A new term for the initial deductible always begins at the turn of the year.

The initial deductible also concerns those, who have so far been getting a full reimbursement for their reimbursable prescription medicines.

The basic reimbursement for medicine expenses increases slightly

When the purchases of reimbursable medicines exceed the initial deductible of €50, Kela will pay a share of the reimbursable medicine’s price. There are three levels of reimbursements for medicine expenses as before. The basic reimbursement increases from 35 percent to 40 percent. The lower (65 %) and the higher (100 %) special reimbursements remain unchanged.

A customer pays a bit greater deductible of the higher special reimbursement class’ medicines in the future. The deductible was earlier 3.00 € as now it is 4.50 €.

The annual deductible of medicine expenses has reduced slightly to 610.37 € in the year 2016.

– The initial deductible and every deductible payments made for reimbursable medicines are counted into the annual deductible of medicine expenses. When the annual deductible has been exceeded, the customer pays 2.50 € every time he/she retrieves his/her reimbursable medicines.

The purpose in changing the reimbursements is to support particularly those, who use a lot of medicines. Those who use medicines casually will get less reimbursements for their medicine expenses in the future.
